Irish Dexter Cattle

We did lots of research into different cattle breeds that would suit our
needs here at Thane's Neck Farm.  We wanted a small friendly breed
that the kids would be comfortable around, would give a good volume
of high quaility milk and provide beef for our family.  Our research lead
us to discover the
Irish Dexters... we have never looked back!

Irish Dexter cattle are a breed believed to have originated from the
Irish Kerry cattle of Southwest Ireland in the early 19th century.
Dexters are naturally small cattle, not bred down from the larger
breeds as miniatures have been.  They are the smallest of the breeds
that are not classified as miniature.  They are known for their gentle
disposition and their ability to forage on less desirable vegetation.
Due to their size they are particularly suited to small acreages.
Dexters are dual purpose, producing milk in the range of 1 to 2 gallons
per day, and they produce meat that is fine grained and normally
grades USDA Select even after being fed on grass and legume
pastures which makes them perfect for the small homestead.   Ease of
calving and a long reproductive life are additional benefits.  Dexters
come in three main solid colors, Black (most common), Dun and Red
(least common).

Blossom and Riona are our family milk cows.  To provide that milk they must each produce a calf once a year.  These
calves are at times offered for sale.  Please call or e-mail if you are interested in calves we may have for sale.  Thank You!
